Two years ago, Ashley Mizell, who is now thirty years old, and her high school sweetheart Mike, were living the American dream. Ashley was growing her very own photography business, which she loved doing. Their three adorable sons were happy and healthy, and the future was bright and promising. Ashely says that she couldn’t think of life getting any better than how it was at the time. That was when Ashley noticed that something was not right with her vision. A visit to the doctor left Ashley and Mike devastated when they heard the news.
A New Life, a New Reality as a Blind Woman
Ashley’s world was turned upside down as she started losing her sight.
“I couldn’t even read books to my kids, my whole career in photography came to an end. I sank into such a deep depression, I could barely get out of bed, but eventually, I found a way to make it work.”
On an episode of Dr. Phil, Ashley heard seven-year-old social media star, Ar’Miah, speak about how the OrCam MyEye device has changed her life. Hearing this has inspired Ashley to believe that assistive technology can change her life as a blind woman and help her increase her daily independence.
“As soon as I heard all the independence that this little girl got from the OrCam MyEye, I just knew I was gonna have to have one. And now, I can do things that I didn’t even think were possible.”

OrCam MyEye offers its users a wide variety of life-changing features that helped Ashley improve her quality of life as a blind woman. Activities that became challenging and in some cases even impossible for Ashley to perform, were now possible again. With her OrCam MyEye, Ashley can now read text instantly from any printed or digital surface. She can recognize the faces of her family members and friends, recognize bar codes of shelf products, identify money notes, colors, and so much more.
“The OrCam MyEye device has given me independence that I really never thought I could have….the OrCam has allowed me to interact with my kids”
During the Dr. Phil show, Ashley demonstrated how the revolutionary Smart Reading feature helps her to navigate the device’s text reading feature to only read what she wants it to from any printed or digital surface.
“Let me show you how it only lets me pick up certain parts from the newspaper that interest me.”
Ashley said before instructing her OrCam MyEye to read only specific parts from the newspaper that interest her.
Ashley Uses Her Personal Experiences to Motivate Others Through Social Media
Ever since Ashley’s vision loss, she has become a social media influencer. She shares content about her experiences as a blind mom of boys that motivates and inspires her followers on TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
When Dr. Phil asked Ashley what her main motivation for her online activities that she could share with her 100 thousand social media followers, Ashley answered that she wants to be a voice for the blind and visually impaired.
“Just because you lost your vision doesn’t mean you lost your life.” says Ashley.
OrCam Has Helped Tens of Thousands of Visually Impaired People Worldwide
Ashley is not the first blind woman to have her life changed completely thanks to an OrCam device. OrCam Technologies has been helping people with low vision from around the world to get back to work, complete their studies, and much more for some years now. In 2020, the largest global awareness campaign to empower the visually impaired community that the world has ever seen was launched by OrCam in partnership with legendary soccer player Leo Messi.
In addition to developing assistive technology for people who are blind and visually impaired, OrCam has developed another device that helps people with mild low vision and all kinds of reading difficulties to be able to read independently. OrCam Read has changed the way people with reading difficulties such as Dyslexia can read on their own regardless of their condition.
OrCam is hoping planning to release a device later on this year that will help people with hearing impairments. OrCam Hear will enable people who are hard of hearing to be able to hear what is being said to them in events with a large number of people and with loud background noise.
